Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of DeLonghi Esclusivo DCM485 10-Cup Thermal Carafe and Coffeemaker, Brushed Stainless SteelCustomer Review: Beautiful, but seriously flawed Summary: 2 StarsI bought this a couple years ago because it is so beautiful. It classes up any kitchen.
Within a week, I had my first overflow - a huge mess all over the counter and floor. I figured I must have done something wrong. Sure enough, I hadn't put the carafe in far enough to completely open the pour-while-brewing valve. I took great care for the next couple weeks. Then another overflow. What a mess. Then another and another. I finally figured out that they just engineered the guts of the coffee basket very badly. I finally completely removed the pour-while-brewing valve from the coffee basket, which at least stopped the overflows.
The carafe spills if you don't pour VERY slowly, but it keeps the coffee drinkably warm for a couple hours. I always had to have the manual at hand for setting the clock and autostart, even though I am pretty techie. There's nothing intuitive about it. There is no power backup on this, so it needs to be reset for even a momentary power loss.
Mine finally died last week (yay!), so I bought a new coffee maker. It isn't quite as pretty, but I learned the hard way from this coffee maker that looks aren't everything.
Customer Review: Not Hot Summary: 3 StarsAlways, Amazon sends out their products swiftly which we appreciate. The coffee maker is attractive and easy to use. If one wants coffee that is not bitter, use a filter along with the one that comes with the machine. Our only complaint is it does not make the coffee hot enough. We still have to put our cup in the microwave to bring the temperature up. We would love to find a machine that makes HOT coffee.
Customer Review: Makes Great Coffee Summary: 4 StarsIt makes a great cup of coffee which is, after all, its purpose in being. The pot design is great, once you get the hang of it and it keeps coffee hotter than most for longer. The only thing that prevents a fifth star is the buttons that work the thing. They stick with regularity causing various problems and the clock is just impossible to deal with. We use none of it except to push a button once or twice, maybe three times to get the coffee going. We put up with it because it does a good job of making coffee.
Customer Review: Good, but in the end, not worth the money. Summary: 3 StarsAlright. I've had this coffee machine straight from the Starbucks retail store nearly 2 years ago for $150 when we had friends stay the weekend (couldn't NOT have a coffee machine!).
Things have been fine until the last month or so.
Well, that's not entirely the truth.
Pros:
1. thermal carafe keeps coffee warm up to 8 hours! True! This is something i actually need nowadays as i work from home.
2. metal filter never needs replacing. Well worth the non-hassle. Srsly.
3. nice quality overall.
Cons:
1. The carafe had a funky open/close twist system that would never line up, and i'm no idiot, so it dripped everywhere about 50% of the time. Arrrgh.
2. it just died. For a 150 clam piece of beautiful metal and plastic, it's a shame they aren't built better. It's a huge shame that it's not worth anything to anyone anymore. Why? it won't operate. the light comes on, but it won't pump.
The wife says stop paying more than $20 for a coffee pot, but i'm the opposite.
I want one that:
A. makes great coffee. everyday.
B. is solid and reliable
C. looks good
D. doesn't cost a mint.
...and actually, i wouldn't mind paying big for this. The thing is, you never know when a manufacturer goes on the cheap for certain parts. This is a huge problem for the consumer. the result is varying reviews due to unreliable (for some) parts.
In my perspective, some manufacturers will analyze the cost/benefit/appeal ratio for consumers and pick somewhere in the middle.
Show me the brand that doesn't go cheaply on parts, labor, design, reliability, etc. Isn't that what we're all looking for? I thought DeLonghi was that. Not so much this time.
Time to move up to espresso machines?
Customer Review: Delonghi DCM485 IS THE WORSE COFFE MACHINE!!!! Summary: 1 StarsI bought this coffee maker with out reading the reviews. Big mistake. I had ALL the problems stated by previous customers. With out going into great details. I went through three of these coffee makers in 21 months. 1st one I returned. Thought I received a defected one. #2 machine guit working after 11 months. I did the cut 6" of cord mail $7.50 and wait 6 weeks. 3rd quit after 9 months. Now I'm with out a coffee maker again and there is nothing Deloghi can do. The one warrenty is only on the 1st coffee maker. Doing my research now. I can tell you I will never buy anything Deloghi again.
