Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of DeLonghi XU625B Alfredo Ultima 6-Slice Toaster Oven, BlackCustomer Review: Disapppointing &Truly Dangerous Summary: 1 Stars
We bought this oven for our first apartment after getting married -- my wife took my recommendation because I had an old Delonghi, bought in 1992 that still cooks perfectly and is mechanically solid too - the only problem with the older one was that it was so cosmetically "used" and ugly that we wanted a newer one for our new home together. Luckily I stored the old one.
With the new one, the first thing I noticed was that it was rather flimsy and did not cook evenly like the old one did. The back is hotter than the front and the bottom is hotter than the top. A few weeks later, the tinny pan that was included with it rusted out when we left it overnight to soak in the sink. Luckily, I could replace this with the wonderful sturdy enameled pan from my old Delonghi oven.
Then the SERIOUS problems began...
The knob that times the toast is the same knob that turns the oven itself on or off -- this is a major design flaw and hazard.
After only a few weeks of use, the timer malfunctioned: when the toast "timed" and the bell rang, the oven would not turn off. We had to manually reset the knob to turn the oven off. We burned a lot of toast whenever we became momentarily distracted or didn't hear the bell. Then the bell stopped working, making it worse. Nonetheless, we decided to "get used to it" because most of the time, we used the oven for baking, and only occasionally used the timer for making toast.
More recently, an even more dangerous problem appeared: we cannot turn the oven off, no matter what we do!
After one turns the oven off manually, the mechanical timer now kicks in, merrily ticks past the "off" setting, and turns the oven on full blast all by itself. It simply won't stay off. The only way to turn off the oven is to unplug it.
NO appliance should have such a blatently dangerous flaw. It is not worth repairing. Avoid this oven. It is unsafe, period.
I'm going to get my old Delonghi out of storage today and give it a good clean up. It may be ugly, but it worked fine for more than a decade without a problem.
Description of DeLonghi XU625B Alfredo Ultima 6-Slice Toaster Oven, BlackFor the whole family, a countertop toaster oven is indispensable. This handsome, compact unit (16-1/2 inches wide, including handles, by 9 inches high by 11 inches deep) toasts six slices of bread for breakfast, broils Junior's burger and Dad's steak, toasts Sis's sandwich, bakes Mom's cake and meat loaf, and heats frozen pizzas while everyone watches television. Inside it's enameled porcelain for even heating. Included is a wire rack that slides into two positions and holds a baking-broiling pan, which comes with a broiling rack, and a thermostat dials up temperatures from "keep warm" to 470 degrees to "toast." Another dial controls toasting from "light" to "dark, " and a third dial, with "broil" or "bake/toast" settings, turns on top and bottom heating elements. Wire rack, pan, and the broiling rack go in the dishwasher, while the interior, exterior, and glass door wipe clean with soapy water. An instruction booklet tells all. --Fred Brack
